Learn about our flight training awards!
The Thrill of the First Flight’s (TOTFF) Flight Training Award is designed to provide underserved and aspiring young aviators with the opportunity to pursue their passion for aviation by covering the costs of initial flight training. This award aims to remove financial barriers and expand access to aviation education, fostering the next generation of skilled pilots, aerospace professionals, and industry leaders.
By investing in their aviation journey, we strive to cultivate leadership, discipline, and technical skills that will propel recipients toward a successful future in the field of aviation.
The award supports high school students who demonstrate a strong commitment to aviation, academic potential, and financial need, ensuring that passion and dedication—not financial constraints—determine their ability to achieve their dreams of flight. Whether recipients aim for private pilot certification, commercial aviation careers, or aerospace engineering, this program provides them with a foundation for success in the aviation industry.
Through this initiative, Thrill of the First Flight is committed to empowering youth—especially those from low-income backgrounds, underrepresented communities, and first-generation aviation students—by providing hands-on training, mentorship, and career guidance.
Matt Marshburn, aka ‘Cousin Itt’ (1967-2022), was a U.S. military veteran and aviation professional with a passion for flying. Matt’s enduring wish was to share his love of all things aviation with young people and to bring awareness to the personal and career opportunities it offers. In 2018, Matt founded Cuz Itt Matters, a program designed to give at-risk and underserved youth in our area the opportunity to experience flying for themselves. We lost Matt way too soon but, thanks to the generosity of friends and supporters, his dream and legacy live on.
In honor of Matt, one Chatham County awardee will receive up to 16 hours of flying instruction through “Thrill of the First Flight.” Along the way, we encourage youth to take a moment and observe Matt's Waypoints!
